Walking on Cars – Everything this Way (2016) FRENCH

Un an. C’est à peu près le retard que j’ai pour Walking on Cars. Il y a presque deux semaines, une amie m’a envoyé un tweet à propos du groupe, en y associant leur vidéo Speeding Cars.

Puisque je fais souvent deux choses en même temps, j’ai continué à boulotter sur mon projet tout en écoutant la vidéo plus que de la regarder et l’écouter. Ça s’est souvent avéré être la meilleure solution pour trouver un bon groupe plutôt qu’un beau groupe.

Ne vous méprenez pas, je n’ai rien contre un joli garçon ou fille mais quand on cause musique, les seules choses qui m’importent sont les notes de musique, les paroles et un bon feeling.

S’ils peuvent me surprendre ? Extra. S’ils me font danser dans ma cuisine, casque sur les oreilles ? Encore mieux.

Lequel de ces stades Walking on Cars a atteint. Nous allons voir mais faisons d’abord connaissance avec le groupe.

Le groupe, composé de 5 membres, s’est formé à Dingle, en Irlande. The Cranberries, The Corrs, Snow Patrol, The Script, The Boomtown Rats ou, bien sûr U2 sont juste quelques exemples qui vous aident à avoir foi en ces enfants de l’Irlande lorsque l’on parle musique. Et puis, on découvre que Walking on Cars s’est formé parce que leurs membres… s’ennuyaient. Ajoutez à cela que le nom du groupe veut dire… ben rien, en fait : c’est juste un terme qu’Evan Hadnett – le batteur du groupe – a lâché à chaud alors qu’ils essayaient de trouver leur nom. Vous parlez d’un plan de carrière, hein ?

Bon attendez, partez pas parce qu’en fait, il y a un peu plus que ce que l’on voit au premier abord derrière ces cinq-là.

Tout d’abord, vivre dans une petite ville (1500 âmes… grand maximum), quasiment isolée du reste du monde, peut effectivement provoquer quelques sacrés moment d’ennui mais vous trouverez nettement plus facilement un bon groupe d’amis que dans la grande Londres de 8 millions d’habitants. Et c’est ce qu’ils sont.

Ensuite, ce n’est pas parce que vous choisissez un nom qui ne veut rien dire que vous n’êtes pas passionné, motivé et bosseur. Et c’est ce qu’ils sont. Encore une fois.

Après avoir décidé qui jouait de quoi (parce que 3 guitaristes et pas de bassiste était apparemment « un peu trop » :D ), le groupe s’est isolé dans une maison, loin de toutes distractions : pas d’Internet, pas de télé, pas de couverture téléphonique, pas de transports. Ils se sont concentrés sur ce qui les avait amenés là : la musique. Juste la musique. On pourrait penser que les fondations du groupe se sont établies là-bas et de cette façon grâce à cet épisode de leur vie.

Avec leur musique en poche, quelle suite ? La faire connaitre au monde, pardi ! Enfin… en Irlande, d’abord. Le concours Red Bull Bedroom Jam a été en cela une superbe opportunité pour le groupe puisque… ils en ont été les vainqueurs de l’édition 2012, leur permettant d’enregistrer As We Fly South, leur tout premier album, orchestré, produit et mixé par Tom McFall.

Le groupe gagne la reconnaissance de sa terre natale et joue bientôt devant des fans et des représentants de labels… s’assurant finalement d’un contrat avec Universal et un EP, sorti en 2014. Ils ont ensuite pris le temps de se construire un fan base hors de l’Irlande avant de sortir, début 2016, l’album dont je vais vous parler. D’ailleurs, assez d’histoire : parlons maintenant musique…

La plage d’ouverture est Catch Me If You Can, qui explore ces moments de la vie où on se sent moins sûr de soi, moins fort et où l’on se rend compte que, finalement, il n’y a aucune honte à avoir parce que… c’est une des choses qui font partie de la Vie. Le choix de placer cette chanson en ouverture est idéal et impose ce son avec lequel nous allons devenir familiers…

Vient ensuite ce morceau de dingue qu’est Two Stones… Mélodie des plus entrainantes à laquelle on ne peut ABSOLUMENT pas résister tandis que Sheehy nous parle de… HEIN, QUOI ?! La chanson explore un sujet sombre et triste – également décrit dans la vidéo – et j’ai un large sourire sur le visage ?! Et bien, je suppose que le voilà, le moment de surprise envoyé par le groupe. Etape une, me surprendre : ça, c’est fait.

Don’t Mind Me est un bon morceau pour enchaîner sur Two Stones. Notre héros semble alors avoir trouvé une certaine forme de rédemption et voit la vie sous un jour moins sombre…

A ce moment de l’écoute, je commence à ressentir un truc que j’ai déjà vécu en 2012 lorsque j’ai écrit mon article sur les Imagine Dragons. A l’époque, le groupe n’avait encore sorti qu’un EP et n’était pas encore venu faire le tour de l’Europe mais j’avais senti un « quelque chose » dans cet EP, un ptit feeling qui apparaissait à la fin de chaque chanson… ce sentiment qu’il y avait là quelque chose qui en valait la peine, un quelque chose qui donnait confiance. Walking On Cars et Imagine Dragons sont différents mais quand il s’agit de musique, votre intuition ne vous trompe pas… Après avoir écouté les trois premières chansons de Everything This Way, j’avais la forte impression que je pouvais faire confiance au groupe irlandais.

Avais-je tort ? Les neuf chansons restantes allaient-elles me donner tort ?

Oh que non. Non, non. Vraiment pas.

Speeding Cars était – en quelque sorte – un premier rendez-vous avec le groupe et avait déjà déclenché quelque chose : musique un tantinet dramatique, paroles touchantes… Tous les ingrédients étaient réunis pour me faire tomber amoureuse. Et cela a effectivement marché. 2 :27, le frisson intense et 2 :37, l’affaire était dans le sac. Parce que 10 secondes à l’intérieur d’une chanson, c’est parfois bien assez pour tomber amoureux.

Flying High Falling Low, As We Fly South (choix parfait pour clore l’album!) et – plus spécialement - Love Back Down se sont également frayées un chemin à travers la partie sensible de ma personnalité. J’ai parfaitement compris la signification de Hand in Hand puisque je me souviens très bien de ces rares moments où il ne m’a fallu que quelques minutes pour me sentir à l’aise avec quelqu’un que je venais de rencontrer. Parfois la vie est faire de moments un peu dingues, inexplicables mais juste beaux… Tick Tock et Always Be With You, avec leurs rythmiques addictives, me sont restées en tête pendant des heures après les avoir écoutées…

Walking On Cars m’a-t-il fait atteindre l’étape deux? Vous savez, la partie où je suis debout dans la cuisine, en train de danser et n’en ayant absolument rien à faire que n’importe qui puisse me voir ? Oui. Plus d’une fois! Ship Goes Down, Hand in Hand et At Gunpoint m’ont emmenée sur cette piste de danse… Donc, étape deux : ça, c’est fait aussi!

La voix de Patrick Sheehy a clairement un sacré potentiel et je suis certaine qu’avec le temps, nous allons découvrir une palette encore plus large de ses capacités vocales… Nous en avons déjà un petit aperçu sur Don’t Mind Me, Hand in Hand et As We Fly South, par exemples. Sa voix m’a rappelé, à de nombreuses reprises, la voix de l’un de mes chanteurs favoris, alias Tom Smith, du groupe britannique Editors. Smith a cette incroyable capacité à sortir des notes extrêmement basses et de nous impressionner trois secondes plus tard en lâchant des notes placées fort haut. La voix de Sheehy (Pa, pour ses amis) a une voix plus rauque qui le rend différent de Smith – et tout aussi agréable à écouter – mais j’ai le sentiment que le timide jeune homme de Dingle pourrait bien continuer à nous impressionner dans le futur…

Un groupe n’est pas uniquement fait d’un chanteur. Du coup, laissez-moi vous présenter les autres membres de Walking On Cars. Honneur aux dames : Sorcha Durham est la pianiste/claviériste du groupe et… seule demoiselle de cet ensemble fort masculin. Nous avons ensuite Dan Devane à la guitare, Paul Flannery à la basse et Evan Hadnett derrière la batterie. Walking On Cars est un de ces groupes où vous pouvez clairement entendre – en écoutant l’album – que chacun de ses membres apporte son talent pour faire de chaque chanson un bel ensemble musical. Ouvrez grand les oreilles sur chaque chanson et vous entendrez la partie piano. Ou la basse. Ou la batterie. Ou la guitare. Parfois, le son d’un instrument se perd dans la masse ou dans le processus de mixage et je déteste cela. Pour moi, un musicien est tout aussi important qu’un chanteur et j’aime entendre le son d’un instrument (sauf peut-être l’accordéon mais cela est une autre histoire). J’ai eu entière satisfaction sur ce point en écoutant Everything This Way et suis impatiente de vivre un second épisode avec ces cinq-là…

Parce que oui, chers lecteurs, il y aura un second épisode puisque le groupe a récemment annoncé sur Twitter qu’ils ont commencé à écrire pour leur second album.

Oh… une dernière chose : un des (très !) bons côtés de la musique est qu’elle voyage à travers le temps, parfois à travers les décennies pour finalement nous atteindre. Robert Johnson a enregistré sa première chanson en 1936, les Beatles se sont séparés il y a presque 50 ans mais nous pouvons encore aujourd’hui apprécier leur musique. Je suis une année en retard pour les Walking On Cars mais après tout ne vaut-il pas mieux tard… que jamais ?   

Je suis contente qu’Elodie les ai mis sur mon chemin parce que ce n’était définitivement pas une perte de temps. Cela pourrait même être le début d’une belle histoire d’amour musicale… Ils ont un concert prévu dans ma Belgique natale et ont la chance de pouvoir jouer à l’Ancienne Belgique – probablement la plus belle salle de concert de Belgique – mais comme le concert est sold out, je ne serai pas de la partie cette fois pour apprécier leur musique en live. Mais Messieurs – et Mademoiselle ! – soyez certains que lors de votre retour en Belgique, je vous… attraperai si je peux ! ;)

Walking on Cars – Everything this Way (2016)

One year. This is pretty much how late I am for Walking on Cars. Almost two weeks ago, a friend tweeted me about the band, sending me their Speeding Cars video.

As I often do two things at a time, I kept on working on my project while listening to the video instead of listening and watching it. It’s often been the best way for me to find a good music band and not a good-looking music band.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against a good looking guy or girl but when it comes to music, the only thing that matters to me are music notes, lyrics and a good spirit.

If they can surprise me? Better. If they make me dance in my kitchen, with my headphones on? Even Better.

Which one of these levels did Walking on Cars reach? Well, we’ll see but first let’s get to know the band.

The 5-piece band was formed in Dingle, Ireland. The Cranberries, The Corrs, Snow Patrol, The Script, The Boomtown Rats or, of course, U2 are just a few that helps you believe in Ireland’s children when it comes to music. Then you find out that Walking on Cars was apparently first formed out of… boredom. Add to that that the band’s name means actually… nothing: it’s just something Evan Hadnett – the band’s drummer – said in the heat of the moment when they were trying to find a name. So much for a career plan, eh?

Hey wait, don’t leave yet because there’s actually more than meets the eye with these five.

First, living in a small town (1500 souls… ish. At the most.), nearly isolated from the rest of the world, may indeed lead to a few moments of boredom but you’ll find yourself a bunch of good friends much more easily than in the crowded 8 million-people of London. And that’s what they are.

Second, just because you picked a name that means nothing doesn’t mean you’re not passionate, driven and hard-working. And that’s what they are. Again.

After deciding who’d play which instrument (‘cos 3 guitarists with no bassist was apparently a bit “too much” :D ), the band isolated themselves in a house, far from any distractions: no Internet, no television, no mobile phone coverage, no transport. All they did was focus on what brought them there: music. Just music. Some may think this episode was probably how and where their foundations were built.

With music in their pockets, what was next? Spreading it to the world, of course! Well… Ireland first. One good opportunity came along the way with the Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition… which they won in 2012, leading to the recording of As We Fly South, the band’s very first album, produced, engineered and mixed by Tom McFall.

The band got recognition in their homeland and were soon playing a show in front of fans and music labels executives… ensuring themselves a record deal with Universal and an EP, released in 2014. Then they took their time, building themselves a fan base outside Ireland before releasing, in early 2016, the album I’m about to talk to you about. So enough band history now and more music talk…

The album opens with Catch Me If You Can, exploring those moments in life when we do not feel so confident or strong and showing that finally there’s no shame in it cos… that’s just what life is. The song is also wisely chosen as first track and sets up the sound that we’re about to get familiar with…

Then comes that crazy tune that is Two Stones… Uplifting melody to which you ABSOLUTELY can’t stay insensitive while Sheehy’s singing about… WAIT, WHAT?! The song explores a quite dark and sad subject – as also described in the video - and I’m just having a big smile on my face?! Well I guess this is the moment of surprise provided to me by the band. Step one, surprising me: done.

Don’t Mind Me is a nice follow-up to Two Stones. Our hero seems to find a little redemption and finally see life in a brighter day…

To this point, I began to have a feeling that I’ve had already experienced in 2012 when I wrote my article about Imagine Dragons. Back then, the band had only released an EP and not started touring Europe yet but I sensed a little something in that EP, a certain something that happened at the end of each song… the feeling that there was something worth the shot, worth the faith. Walking on Cars and Imagine Dragons are different but when it comes to music, your guts can’t fool you… After listening to the first three songs of Everything This Way, I had the feeling that I could put some faith in the Irish band.

Was I wrong? Did the nine songs left proved me wrong?

Oh no. No, no. Definitely not.

Speeding Cars was sort of a first date with the band and it definitely triggered something: that dramatic music, those touching lyrics… All that was there was made to make me fall in love. And it worked. 2:27, the intense thrill and 2:37 that was done. Because 10 seconds within a song are enough to fall in love.

Flying High Falling Low, As We Fly South (perfect ending for the album!) and - especially - Love Back Down definitely made their way to the soft part of my personality as well. I definitely understood the meaning of Hand in Hand as I remembered those rare moments when it only took me a few minutes to feel good with someone I had just met. Sometimes, life’s just made of crazy natural beautiful moments… Tick Tock and Always Be With You, with their addictive rhythms, stayed inside my head for hours after first listening to them…

Did Walking On Cars get me to step two? You know, the part where I get up in my kitchen, dancing and not caring at all that anyone could actually see me? Yep, they did. More than once. Ship Goes Down, Hand in Hand and At Gunpoint got me there… So step two: done!

Patrick Sheehy’s voice has clearly a great potential and I’m sure that in time, we’ll see an even wider range of his voice abilities… We already have a few hints of it on Don’t Mind Me, Hand in Hand and As We Fly South, for example. In many ways, his voice reminded me of one of my favourite singers, AKA Tom Smith, of the British band Editors. Smith has this incredible capacity of providing deep notes and yet be able to impress us by singing some higher pitched-notes. Sheehy’s voice (Pa, as his friends call him) has got a more raspy tone that makes it different from Smith – and as much enjoyable - but I have the feeling that the shy young man of Dingle will keep impressing us in the future…

A band is not only made of a singer, so let me introduce you to the other members of Walking On Cars. Ladies first: Sorcha Durham is the pianist of the band and only girl in this very male universe. Then we have Dan Devane at the lead guitar, Paul Flannery playing bass and Evan Hadnett behind the drums. Walking On Cars is one of those bands where you can clearly hear – while listening to the album – that each member bring his/her talent to make each song a good ensemble of music. Open you ears to the sound of e-ve-ry song and you’ll find out that you can clearly hear the piano. Or the bass. Or the drums. Or the lead guitar. Sometimes, an instrument sound is lost in the process of mixing or arrangements made and I hate that. To me, a musician is as important as a singer and I love the sound of instruments (well maybe not the accordion but that’s another story). I got a pretty good share of that while listening to Everything This Way and I sure can’t wait to get a second round of that from all of them…

Because yes, readers, there WILL be a second round as the band recently announced on Twitter that they’ve started writing for the next album.

Oh and one last thing : one (very!) good thing about music is that it travels through time, sometimes through many decades to – eventually – get to you, to any of us someday. Robert Johnson recorded his first song in 1936, the Beatles split almost 50 years but we can still enjoy the sound of their music today. I’m one year late for the Walking on Cars but after all, isn’t it better late… than never? I’m glad Elodie put them in my way because it was definitely no waste of time. It may even be the beginning of a beautiful music love story… They have one show planned in my native Belgium and are lucky to play in Ancienne Belgique - probably the greatest venue in Belgium – but since it’s a sold out show, I won’t be there this time to enjoy their live skills. But guys – and girl! – be sure that next time you’re in Belgium, I’ll… catch you if I can! ;)

Ceasefire – In the Dead of Night (2013) FRENCH

 

En avril 2012, je vous expliquais à quel point YouTube divisait les gens mais qu'il pouvait cependant nous amener de belles surprises dans nos vies… C'était le jour où je vous faisais part de ma toute récente affection pour la musique d'Imagine Dragons, après avoir découvert leur EP "Continued Silence". A l'époque, je n'arrêtais pas de dire à qui voulait l'entendre qu'ils allaient probablement faire fort. Certains de mes amis m'ont dit que j'avais une réaction un peu exagérée. Vraiment? Dites?

 

Quoi qu'il en soit, les réseaux sociaux récoltent aussi leur lot de controverses : Twitter, Facebook etc. sont critiqués pour leur manque de sécurité, sont accusés de couper les gens du monde "réel". Le fait est : cela dépend de la façon dont on les utilise. La vérité : j'ai découvert bon nombre de groupes intéressants dont je n'aurais probablement jamais entendu parler si je ne m'étais pas faite de nouveaux amis via les réseaux sociaux. En voici justement un…

 

Ceasefire est un groupe californien formé en 2011, qui m'a été présenté comme étant "comparé aux Killers, U2 et Thirty Seconds to Mars par KROQ". Bien qu'étant européenne, la radio KROQ est pour moi une solide référence en matière de bonne musique rock et les trois groupes cités me parlent particulièrement. Cela a donc attisé suffisamment ma curiosité que pour écouter l'EP du groupe.

 

La chanson d'ouverture de l'EP, "I Want To Know", est un morceau qui nous fait vite réaliser que le quatuor est définitivement un groupe ROCK. Quinze secondes et on atterrit déjà dans leur monde. J'ai toujours eu beaucoup de respect pour ces groupes qui ne font qu'un mais j'apprécie aussi écouter le talent respectif des musiciens dans ces groupes. La basse est toujours l'instrument le plus difficile à entendre sur les albums et en "live" et je n'ai pas pu m'empêcher de remarquer les bonnes lignes de basse de Tristan Montgomery sur ce morceau… tout en pouvant apprécier le rythme de batterie d'Anthony Hainsworth et la mélodie créée par la guitare de Kamren Alexander. De façon assez amusante, cette chanson m'a un peu fait penser aux copains belges de Vegas… ce qui est très bien!

"Wake Up" est la chanson qui m'a été transmise pour découvrir le groupe. Le morceau démarre avec une mélodie de claviers, soutenue par la batterie de Hainsworth. J'ai toujours été une "fille à batterie" alors… c'était dans la poche en un temps recoooooooord. Ce que je ne savais pas, par contre, c'est que "Wake Up" contiendrait un peu plus qu'un bon rythme de batterie…
Le deuxième couplet a fait naître un sourire sur mon visage : la voilà, la référence à U2! La voix de Ray Alexander a définitivement quelques points communs avec la voix de Bono. Cela ne me dérangerait pas de voir les garçons de Ceasefire reprendre une ou deux chansons de U2 lors de concerts : d'après ce que j'ai entendu en écoutant cet EP, tous les membres du groupe devraient avoir ce qu'il faut pour assurer à ce niveau-là!
Revenons à la chanson… parce qu'il y a d'autres surprises sur cette chanson de 3 minutes 32. A la 1:55, entrée de la guitare. 2:13… apparition de ce qui me fait sentir teeellement "vivante" quand j'écoute de la musique, c'est exactement ce genre de truc qui m'envoie habituellement une onde électrique le long de la colonne (jamais ressenti ça? Vraiment?). 2:50, je suis debout dans le salon! OK… là, c'était certain: il fallait que je mette la main sur l'entièreté de cet album…

 

OK… bon, un groupe rock? Pas de douces mélodies pour que les filles puissent se blottir dans les bras de leur copain pour se faire cajoler alors? Maaaa si, hein… il y a… "Always". A chaque fois que j'entends "Always" et "chanson d'amour", mon esprit repart dans les 90ies et réentend la chanson de Bon Jovi (me blâmez pas, je suis née fin des 70ies!). Bien que la chanson de Ceasefire soit différente de la chanson écrite par le célèbre groupe du New Jersey, je me rends compte que certains fans de Bon Jovi pourraient peut-être voir quelques similitudes dans le chant et le style du solo de guitare. La chanson "Always" de Ceasefire appartient à ce que j'appelle les "chansons d'amour éternelles" : celles que l'on écoute et dont on peut difficilement dire si elles ont été écrites dans les 80ies, les 90ies, les années deux mille ou de nos jours. Cela les rend souvent d'autant plus efficaces!

"In the Dead of Night", la chanson-titre de l'album, a assurément de la puissance à revendre. J'aime les chansons à histoires ou des paroles qui vous donnent l'opportunité de faire fonctionner votre imagination (C'est la raison pour laquelle j'aime tellement Per Gessle de Roxette et Kelly Jones des Stereophonics). "Miss Cinderella on a stripper pole, she shakes her money cause she knows her eyes are gold and Jesus never could reach her like you" (Mademoiselle Cendrillon sur une barre de pole dance, elle secoue son argent parce qu'elle sait qu'elle a de l'or dans les yeux et Jésus ne pourra jamais l'atteindre comme toi) était une phrase suffisamment intrigante que pour attirer mon attention…
Le lancement du clip de "In the Dead of Night" était avant-hier. Une bonne occasion de vous présenter les garçons de Ceasefire, évoluant dans un monde où les univers surréalistes de 30 Seconds To Mars, Mad Max et Star Wars semblent n'être devenus plus qu'un.

 

"My Way" est probablement la chanson la plus envoûtante de cet EP. Des paroles où l'on fait usage de différentes manières du mot "way", ainsi que de ses possibles variations; des harmonies vocales supplémentaires et une section de cordes ajoutent un caractère un peu plus 'dramatique' à la chanson. Ainsi que… cette mélodie captivante avec ce riff de guitare qui vous reste en tête jusqu'à ce qu'il se transforme en efficace solo, associé à la voix de Ray Alexander. La voix d'Alexander est remplie de suffisamment de douceur et de puissance à la fois pour pouvoir gérer ce type de chanson sans au-cun problème. J'ai écouté "My Way" à plusieurs reprises et plus je l'écoutais, plus cette voix m'en rappelait une autre. Bien sûr… Par moments, sur cette chanson en particulier, je pouvais presque entendre la voix de Billy Idol!
Pressons encore une fois sur "Play", j'aime trop ce solo!

 

La dernière chanson est "We're Not Breaking Tonight", une chanson au tempo moyen, juste parfaite pour clôturer cet album. Le morceau démarre doucement et la mélodie devient de plus en plus puissante au fil des secondes… Voici effectivement une chanson qui pourrait tout à fait coller à l'univers des Killers, que l'on m'avait cité plus tôt dans la journée. Bien que… "We're Not Breaking Tonight" aurait tout à fait pu aussi faire partie de l'album Take The Crown de Robbie Williams.

 

Revenons à nos garçons de Ceasefire… de nombreuses références musicales (U2, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, The Killers, Robbie Williams…) ont été évoquées dans cet article mais elles ne sont que de petits indices de ce que le groupe est. Ceasefire a son propre son et univers dont les frères Alexander, Tristan Montgomery et Anthony Hainsworth vous donnent un aperçu ici. Et… il ne tient qu'à vous de vous y plonger également…

 

J'ai gardé l'anecdote amusante pour la fin… La personne qui m'a renseignée sur Ceasefire et moi avons un point commun. Imagine Dragons. C'est toujours amusant de constater à quel point les "Ptits Dragons" ne cessent de surgir dans ma vie pour y amener de bonnes choses… A de nombreux niveaux, en fait.

Cette coïncidence "Imagine Dragons" pourrait-elle s'avérer un signe de chance pour les garçons de Ceasefire et les aider à prendre le même chemin que le quatuor de Vegas? Et bien… c'est en tout cas ce que je leur souhaite…

Ceasefire – In the Dead of Night (2013) ENGLISH

In April 2012, I explained to you how YouTube can divide people but can nonetheless also bring good surprises in our lives… That was the day I told you how I fell in love with Imagine Dragons' music, after discovering their "Continued Silence" EP. Back then, I kept telling friends they were probably the next big thing. Some of them were thinking I was a bit overreacting. Well… was I now?

Anyway, same thing happens with social networks: Twitter, Facebook etc. are criticized for lack of security, for cutting people from the "real" world. Thing is: it depends on how you use them. Truth is: I discovered quite a few new interesting bands I would have probably never heard of if not making new friends on social networks. Here's one of them…

Ceasefire is a California-based band formed in 2011 that was introduced to me as being "compared to The Killers, U2, and Thirty Seconds To Mars by KROQ". Although being European, the KROQ radio is a solid reference to me when it comes to good rock music and these three bands sure talk to me. This sure got me curious enough to listen to the band's EP.

 The EP's opening song, "I Want to Know", is a track that surely makes you understand that the foursome is definitely a ROCK band. Fifteen seconds and you've already landed in their world. I always respect bands whose members are making "one" but I also like to listen to each musician's specific talent in bands. Bass is always the toughest instrument to hear on songs and on live performances and I couldn’t help but notice the fine bass lines of Tristan Montgomery on that one… while still being able to enjoy Anthony Hainsworth's drums beats and Kamren Alexander's guitar melody. Funnily enough, generally speaking, this song reminds me of my Belgian musician friends of Vegas… which sounds good to me!

 

"Wake Up" is the song that was sent to me as an introduction to the band. The song starts with a keyboard melody, well-supported by Hainsworth's drums. Always been a "drummer girl" so… that song had me at hellooooo. Little did I know that "Wake Up" would bring a little more than good solid drumming…

Verse 2 brought a smile on my face: here's the U2 reference! The voice of Ray Alexander surely has a few common points with Bono's voice. I wouldn't mind see the boys covering one or two U2 songs on a live performance: from what I've heard while listening to the EP, all members surely have what it takes to be able to do so!

Let's get back to our song… because there were other surprises on this 3:32-long track. 1:55, here comes the guitar. 2:13… this is what makes me feel alive while listening to music, this is exactly what usually sends an electric wave through my spine (never felt that? Really?). 2:50, I'm up in my living room! OK… then that was a sure thing: I needed to put my hands on the whole EP…

 

OK so... a rock band? No soft melodies for girls while cuddling with their boyfriend? Of course, there is… "Always". Every time I hear "Always" and "love song", I go back into the 90ies and the Bon Jovi song (Don't blame me, I was born in the late 70ies!). Although the Ceasefire song is different than the one written by the well-known New Jersey band, I realize some true Bon Jovi fans could find similarities in the way of singing and playing the guitar solo. The Ceasefire "Always" song is one of those tracks that belong to what I call the "timeless love songs": you listen to those and it's hard to know if they were written in the 80ies, the 90ies, the 2000s or right now. Making them damn effective!

 

"In the Dead of Night", title-song of this EP sure has a lot of power… I like songs telling stories or lines that give you the opportunity to use your imagination (A reason why I like Roxette's Per Gessle and Stereophonics' Kelly Jones so much). "Miss Cinderella on a stripper pole, she shakes her money cause she knows her eyes are gold and Jesus never could reach her like you" was surely interesting enough to get my attention…

The video premiere of "In the Dead of Night" was yesterday. A perfect occasion to introduce you to the boys of Ceasefire, caught in a world where the 30 Seconds To Mars, Mad Max and Star Wars surrealistic universes seem to have collided to become one.

 

"My Way" is probably the most haunting song of the EP. Lyrics using different variations and words rhyming with "way", additional vocal harmonies and chords section to add just enough 'drama' to the song. And... that haunting melody with that guitar riff that sticks to the back of your head until it fully rises into a great solo, paired with Ray Alexander's voice. Alexander's voice is full of enough sweetness and power to handle a song like that without a-n-y trouble at all. I listened to "My Way" a few times and the more I was listening, the more his voice made me think of someone. Of course… At times, on this specific song, I could almost hear Billy Idol's voice!

One more "press play", I love that solo too much!

 

The final song of the EP is "We're Not Breaking Tonight", a mid-tempo song that is just perfect to end this EP. The track is starting slowly with the melody getting more and more powerful as seconds go by… Here's one that could indeed fit with the reference to The Killers that was given to me earlier today. Although "We're Not Breaking Tonight" would have totally fit as one track on Robbie Williams 'Take The Crown album too.

Let's get back to the Ceasefire boys, though… a lot of musical references (U2, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, The Killers, Robbie Williams…) were used in this article but they were just tiny clues of what's in store. Ceasefire has its own sound and universe, provided to you by the Alexander brothers, Tristan Montgomery and Anthony Hainsworth. And… it's up to you to find out what it's all about…

I've kept the funny anecdote for last… The guy who introduced me to Ceasefire and me had a common point. Imagine Dragons. This is really funny how much the little dragons keep popping into my life to bring good things… On many levels, actually.
Could this Imagine Dragons coincidence be a sign of good luck for the Ceasefire guys and help them taking the same path than the Vegas foursome? Well, that's definitely all I wish for them…
